As a top technical leader, why would I want a coach?
Taking advantage of the experience of others is smart. Ask any exceptionally successful executive if they had mentors or coaches. Most have.
Having a sounding board with no other interest than your success is important. Your staff, your spouse, and your boss may all have different perspectives that are valuable and you should take advantage of them. However, they are also so close to many situations which may skew their perspective and there's a good chance they don't have the relevant experience set to sort through many of the challenges and opportunities you face. A coach's role is to listen, be objective and unbiased, and work with you to achieve your goals.
If your current job is out of sync with your professional or personal goals or you feel as though there are some things holding you back from the trajectory you are looking for think about getting a coach for a period of time. A coach will work with you to bring these things into alignment and then getting there step by step. The goal of coaching is simple - your success.
How does coaching work?
Typically we work together over a period of time to:
baseline your current professional situation against your desired trajectory
uncover the factors that are holding you back
identify key milestones that build toward a long-term plan to achieve your vision
create action plans to achieve the next steps
continuously re-evaluate, eliminate the roadblocks and take next steps toward the goal
